After hearing her latest release “Bumper”, we fell in love with NatNoiz. We caught up with her to talk more about what inspires her to create music, how she produces, and what being Fearless means to her. After reading this, you will know a lot more about the punk-inspired, bleach blonde who headbangs to heavy house tunes in Sydney.
What is your background in music? Did you start out playing any instruments?
I begged my parents for a guitar when I was 6, my dad finally gifted me an acoustic electric when I was 8. I loved to jam out to grunge and pop-punk growing up. Didn’t put it down for many years…
When did you begin to produce? What inspired you to do so?
I started playing around with production when I was 21. I found it too complex and gave up for a couple of years… got back into it around 23!
Could you tell us the story of how you fell in love with electronic music?
I love all genres of music, particularly electronic music! I guess dance music is hella melodic and inspired me to DJ and produce… I met a lot of good friends in clubs and at bars bonding over beautiful dance music…
What first got you into making mashups, Songs like “The Ghetto Spades” and “Hold Yo Back”?
That was my first attempt at “production”. I had no idea how to make my own music back then, so meshing 2 rad tracks together made me feel like I was getting somewhere. Plus why not hear 2 of your favorite songs at the same time?!
What inspired you to make heavy hitting house music?
Maybe that’s where my love for punk comes into play…I’ve been big on grunge since I was a kid. Anything with a dirty, grimey bass line gives me goosebumps. I think I’ll always try to implement dirty bass lines with whatever music I write…
What DAW do you use?
Ableton. I’ve honestly never tried using anything else.
Rob Papen sub boom bass and Massssiiiiveeee!
Who are your biggest influences as an artist?
I swear this really does change over time… but back when I was 17 and learning to DJ, I was a massive fan of Justice and Deadmau5. Both very different genre wise, but oh so powerful musically AND super talented DJs, as well as producers!! I remember seeing Deadmau5 live a few times and just feeling so obsessed with the entire performance, show and his music…
If you could play any venue in the world, which one would it be and why?
Gosh I have a couple, but to name one probably Holy Ship. That would be an absolute dream and a half.
Are you more of a studio rat or do you prefer being on the stage?
I love bringing presence to the stage. I love to perform. I love to connect musically with people. I’ll always love being on stage.
Do you have any advice for up and coming female artists who are trying to make a name for themselves?
Don’t even put yourself into a category. You are you and you can only achieve what you let yourself. Only you can end your dreams as an artist when you stop working for it.
In a male dominated industry, what inspires you to stay Fearless?
I try not to see artists by gender, but by characters, performers. I have many friends in this industry and we support each other! I just want to deliver my love for music, and just see others enjoy it as much as I do… I don’t think I’ll ever stop loving that.
